  • Need speed? Professional auto racing comes to our famed Virginia International Raceway in Alton numerous times each year, attracting the best in both professional and amateur auto racing. Pittsylvania County is also located within a short drive of several NASCAR venues, including Lowe’s Motor Speedway (Charlotte, VA), Martinsville Speedway and Richmond International Raceway.
  • Want great lakes? Virginia’s largest is right here – Smith Mountain Lake. Both Smith Mountain Lake and Leesville Lake provide endless family fun including boating, canoeing, water skiing, fishing, camping and swimming. Smith Mountain Lake is also the site of a 1,200 acre state park on its north shore, as well as vacation- and year-round homes; and you'll want to take a look at Leesville Lake's newest development, Falcon Ridge.  In Pittsylvania County, you just don't have to go far to enjoy a relaxing day of fun and sun!  It's all right here!
  • Like to hike? You’ll never run out of places to explore – with the Blue Ridge, Shenandoah and Smoky Mountains within a three-hour drive. For fun closer to home, 604-acre Elkhorn Park is the county’s largest private park offering swimming, boating and fishing (on a 100-acre lake), as well as hiking.
  • Have to reach the beach? Head to Virginia Beach, the Outer Banks of North Carolina or Myrtle Beach and the Grand Stand in South Carolina.
  • Ready for MovieNight?  The Gretna Theatre has been restored and is offering the latest, most current movies for your viewing pleasure.  You can plan a night out with the family without going far now!  Want live shows?  The Gretna Theatre offers live shows with local bands.  Enjoy comfortable seating, "movie food" - and chatting with your neighbors -all at your local Gretna Theatre.
  • Enjoy wine? Visit any of over nearby 20 wineries and sample vintages with a fast-growing reputation for excellence.
  • Love golf? Our five area courses include three of the 18-hole variety.
  • Are you a hunter? Managed by the Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries, the 2,710-acre White Oak Wildlife Management Area near our county seat, Chatham, offers outstanding scenery and hunting possibilities.
  • Kids have cabin fever? Numerous museums are located in Pittsylvania County including science, art and history museums. If you're looking for outdoor activities, take them to Pittsylvania Country Wayside Park and let them play on 53 acres of playgrounds and baseball fields or fish in our stocked pond.Want to cool off? Two public and four private swimming pools complement dozens of nature’s watering holes throughout the county.
  • Hungry for sports? Many adult sporting leagues are sponsored by local civic clubs. For kids, organized baseball and basketball leagues are available while summer recreation programs run by our school system offer softball, volleyball, soccer, basketball and more.Prefer to watch? Check out the Danville Braves, the Appalachian League affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. For the best in college sports, visit nearby Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, University of North Carolina, Duke or North Carolina State. Professional football, baseball and basketball are also within your reach in Charlotte (NC), Washington D.C., Baltimore (MD) and Atlanta (GA).
