(Chatham, VA)  Pittsylvania Board of Supervisors Chairman Coy E. Harville announced today that a new Wal-Mart Supercenter will be constructed in Pittsylvania County.  The Supercenter will be located in the Blairs area on US Highway 29 across from the Hatcher Center and the Blairs Fire Department.  This is the first Wal-Mart in Pittsylvania County.

"Pittsylvania County could not be happier to welcome Wal-Mart to our community-this Supercenter will create new jobs and provide significant new tax revenue for our county, " said Chairman Harville.  "One of my top priorities has been to expand the tax  base, provide new opportunities and new services to the citizens of Pittsylvania County.  I am confident this new Wal-Mart will be a benefit to the entire community.

"We believe this new Wal-Mart Supercenter will provide our Pittsylvania County customers with new shopping convenience, flexibility and opportunities," added George Joyner, Wal-Mart Market Manager, who will oversee operations at the new store.  "The 187,000 square foot Supercenter will offer customers nearly 100,000 products, combining full grocery lines and general merchandise under one roof at Wal-Mart's signature Every Day Low Prices."

The new Supercenter will feature a full line of electronics, a large health and beauty aids department, a garden center and a pharmacy.  In addition, the grocery area features a bakery, delicatessen, frozen food department, meat department, fresh produce section, and a dairy department.

"We estimate the store will bring 250 new jobs to the community and will create tens of thousands of dollars in the new tax revenues per year for Pittsylvania County," said Kelly Hobbs, Wal-Mart Senior Public Affairs manager for Virginia.  "We are hopeful that the planning and permitting process will proceed forward so that the store can be open for business in early 2009."
